What it is

Some work depends on judgement, exceptions and knowledge that lives in people's heads rather than in a system. That's what makes it hard to see, explain or hand over. A process map needs to account for that knowledge as well as the steps.

This review is for exactly that kind of work. We look at one area, in depth, with the people who do it, and find out what's really happening. Before anyone decides what to buy or what to change.

It's for you if

  • People agree something needs to change, but not what.
  • Only one or two people really know how the work gets done.
  • Something's about to be bought or built before anyone's clear on the problem.

What it involves

  1. 1

    Week one: see the work

We agree on one area of work and what a useful change would look like. Then we follow the work as it actually happens, alongside the people who do it. That means the handovers, the decisions, the systems, the workarounds and the constraints.

  2. 2

    Week two: find the problem

Next we pin down the real problem and its cause, using everything the first week showed us. Then we write up what we found and what we think you should do about it. It's a short document, focused on what to do next, not a report for the shelf. You see a draft first, and it's not finished until you've had your say.

  3. 3

    The readout

A 90-minute session with you and whoever you want in the room. We walk through the findings, the options and the recommendation.

What you get

  • A map of the work as it actually happens, including the handovers, exceptions and judgement calls that keep it moving.
  • A written account of the problem: what's getting in the way, why, and the constraints around it.
  • A recommendation: what should change, what should be left alone, and what to do first. Software is one possible answer, not the assumed one.
  • Two more weeks of us on hand for questions once you've had time to think.

Tell us what's getting in the way.

A short email is enough to start. We'll come back to you and arrange a time to talk it through, with no obligation on either side.
